Categorical Program Description

Our Categorical Medicine Residency is designed to give housestaff a balance of direct inpatient care in our busy safety-net hospital and outpatient clinics with protected didactic teaching and interactive workshops to enhance their learning experiences and development as a physicians. Categorical residents have graduated responsibility from your PGY-1 to PGY-3 years in patient care, team management and teaching.

Some highlights of the Categorical Medicine Residency are:

  • Pathways program - residents may choose area of distinction in research, ultrasound, clinical teaching, or health systems leadership
  • 3+1 block curriculum
  • Academic half-day didactics, which provide interactive, experiential learning in evidence-based medicine, bedside diagnosis, behavioral medicine, quality improvement, procedures/simulation medicine, ultrasound, integrative medicine and more
  • Ultrasound rotation and procedure training 
  • MASH triage rotation
  • Inpatient service at Highland Hospital (six teams each composed of one rsident and two interns; team cap is 17 patients)
  • Overnight admissions and cross coverage by a separate, dedicated night float and backup team
  • Subspecialty rotations: inpatient consults, specialty outpatient clinics, procedures, and focused didactics
  • MICU team with an open ICU model
    • Optional MICU block at California Pacific Medical Center in San Francisco
  • Continuity adult medicine clinic with a team based model during the ambulatory week
  • Elective blocks—4 weeks in R2 and another 4 weeks in R3 year
    • Electives can taken at another residency program or overseas
  • Scholarly activity and participation in regional and national meetings
  • Quality curriculum and projects
  • Clinical research with faculty
  • Innovative, dynamic, supportive faculty and program leadership
  • Nocturnist program
  • Retreats
